Buying guide
How tall should table legs be?
Leg height is the table height you want, minus the thickness of your top.
Table heights by type
| Table | Height with the top |
|---|---|
| Dining table | 74–76 cm |
| Desk | 72–76 cm |
| Coffee table | 40–45 cm |
| Side table | 50–65 cm, about the height of the sofa arm |
| Console table | 75–85 cm |
| Kitchen counter table | 90–92 cm |
| Bar table | 102–107 cm |
| Bench | 43–47 cm |
Check it against your chairs
Leave 25–30 cm between the chair seat and the top of the table, so legs fit underneath and arms rest comfortably. Measure the seat height of the chairs you already own before you order.
Desks
At a desk your elbows should be level with the desktop or slightly above it with your shoulders relaxed. Most people are comfortable between 72 and 76 cm; tall people may want a few centimetres more.
Top thickness
Solid wood tops are usually 3–5 cm thick, glass 1–1.2 cm, stone 2–3 cm. Measure your own top: a few centimetres change how the table sits.
